Too much synthetic retinol can cause health problems and retinoic acid and retinol palmitate in combination with sunlight may even increase skin cancer risk. Topical retinoids often causes severe local irritation manifested as a burning sensation, peeling, dryness, pruritus (itching), and erythema (redness), which is commonly termed “retinoid dermatitis.” It’s also been linked to photosensitivity, cancerous tumor formation, and reproductive toxicity. There was just no way that I could use that on my face, much less recommend it to my health-focused clients…

I tried some natural oil products that helped my dry skin but did little else while they felt greasy, ruined my pricey pillowcases, and made my face and even hair look oily and unattractive. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic (which means it can clog pores and cause breakouts) while many other oils go bad (rancid) quickly. I even tried making my own products out of things like tallow but that was messy and time consuming plus left me smelling like a dog treat.

Somavalli
